BLOG: Peninsula Clean Energy – A New Community Choice for Brisbane
Last year the Brisbane community was introduced to San Mateo County’s new energy option, the Peninsula Clean Energy (PCE). PCE is a community choice energy (CCE) program, a locally controlled community organization that enables local residents and businesses to have a choice regarding where their energy comes from. A joint powers authority was formed in March 2016, which includes the County of San Mateo and 20 of its cities, including Brisbane. Now PCE has finally launched! The PCE board members and staff recently hosted a press conference and launch celebration for this important moment. Learn more in their press release. The Peninsula Clean Energy Authority provides rate-payers the choice to use either 50% or 100% of their electricity from clean, renewable energy sources. Some of the benefits of enrolling in the PCE program include:
- Local, community control over electricity
- Offers consumers a choice where none currently exists
- Cleaner power supply
- Stable, often cheaper, electricity rates
- Rate-payer funded, NOT taxpayer funded
- Providing funding sources for energy efficiency and innovative energy programs like energy storage and electrical vehicle (EV) charging stations
Supervisor Dave Pine and Supervisor Carole Groom initiated this effort over a year ago and continue to represent PCE as board members. Supervisor Pine has been a regional leader on many sustainable fronts, including speaking at our Speaker Series event on sea level rise.
This forward-thinking and community-based program is exciting for the Brisbane Baylands project. We look forward to utilizing PCE as a key component in meeting Brisbane’s net zero energy goals for the Baylands.
